Title: Perception of inequality and social mobility: case of Kyrgyzstan
Authors: Sakebaeva, Aizhan
Issue Date: Feb-2025
Abstract: This study examines perceptions of income inequality and social mobility in Kyrgyzstan, using data from the ISSP 2019 and supplemented by primary data collected in Kyrgyzstan. It explores how economic self-interest, ideologies, and fairness shape these views, categorizing mobility into meritocratic, status-based, and corruptive types and analyzing their impact on inequality perceptions. These perceptions vary not only across countries but also among individuals within each country. The research links inequality perceptions to experiences of upward mobility, comparing Kyrgyzstan with other post-Soviet countries and Western countries to assess societal attitudes toward inequality and social mobility. This research aims to inform policies promoting inclusive growth and political stability in Kyrgyzstan.
