Abstract: Nation-building and inter-ethnic relations are the issues of paramount importance for multiethnic states on the way of further development. Today formation of a single nation as a supra-ethnic community based on co-citizenship is a priority for Kazakhstan. The subject of this thesis is the existing features of the civic nation-building process in Kazakhstan. The primary focus of this work is to analyze the processes of current civic consolidation in Kazakhstan through examining the various approaches implemented by its leadership and policymakers. It examines factors influencing on civic identity formation such as relations between major ethnic groups, current linguistic situation and viewpoints of elite representatives.
