Authors: Enikeeva, Zalina
Abstract: The accession of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the World Trade Organization, jointly with the membership of the country in the Eurasian Economic Union, makes some differences in tariffs between these organizations. Tariffs, that use members of the EAEU, are mostly higher than those that were applied for Kazakhstan while accession to the WTO. Lower tariffs of the WTO can influence on the amount of imported commodities of the country in that way, that import from countries, who are members of the WTO and not members of the EAEU, will increase. The forecasting model may occur assistance in analysis of influence of the WTO tariffs on import volume of the Republic of Kazakhstan.</summary>

Authors: Mudabber, Zabihullah
Abstract: The thesis aims to present the challenges and opportunities of Afghanistan’s accession to the WTO and provide recommendations to the government and donor institutions. A number of interviews have been conducted with the representatives of the government, donor institutions and businesses inside Afghanistan to identify these challenges and opportunities. A comparative study was also carried out to analyze the experiences of other LDCs and explore what lessons could be drawn for Afghanistan. The interviews and comparative study suggest that the country’s accession to the WTO is an opportunity for its fragile economy to grow despite of having some negative implications on the government revenues. In particular, the accession will provide Afghanistan the opportunity of access to the international markets without trade barriers and bring institutional reform within its trade sector, but it is questionable whether the country will be able to address the technical and professional challenges of post-accession in agriculture, health, education, international law and trade as it lacks expertise in these areas. Although the extension of the thesis findings requires more evidence to judge, the study’s findings challenge general understanding of Afghanistan’s accession to the WTO in the country and point to important new avenues of research.</summary>

Abstract: Budget transparency allows government to be effective, accountable and corruption resistant institution by disclosing key budget documents. Survey of the web-site allowed me to conclude that not all 16 local administrations in Kazakhstan is following budget transparency initiatives defined by the OECD, IMF and IBP practices. Furthermore, oil-producing oblasts are less transparent compared to the non-oil producing oblasts that confirm the idea of resource curse problem in Kazakhstan. Using Panel Analysis method, I found a positive correlation between budget transparency with unemployment and criminalization level on the local level of Kazakhstan. However, small sample size of oblasts and periods does not allow me conclude that resource curse problem can be explained using provincial level of Kazakhstan. Having more oblasts and more periods or using another country with similar characteristic (the Russian Federation or Saudi Arabia) may reinforce or weaken this approach.</summary>
